Downtown and Campus-Adjacent Public Realm Planning and Projects – UC Focus

Presenter: Wendy Hillis, AIA, UC Berkeley Campus Architect

Please join us in person for a robust presentation and discussion of the projects redefining the campus/city edge.  BDA member Mark Rhoades, FAICP will provide context and support.

The presentation and discussion are a continuation of last month’s Downtown presentation by John Caner and will focus on the Downtown edge with the campus, where the most significant levels of change are already underway, and will soon be joined by more. We will include the very significant work happening within the campus along the Bancroft and Hearst edges, as well. The city council members whose districts include these areas will also be invited.

Several exciting new investment and developments are underway right now that is redefining our campus/city edges. Hearst Avenue, Bancroft Way, and especially Oxford Way are being reshaped as you read this after decades of very little change. The boundaries are more blurred as the edges intensify and new urban environments are being created. The primary thrust of the changes are new student-oriented residential projects. But the campus has large projects underway both within the campus perimeter, and outside of it.

Come find out more. Tell us what you think. Be a part of what’s next!

For Discussion and Adoption:  BDA Position on Corridors Plan

The Steering Committee has prepared a recommendation for the membership to consider a BDA Position on both policy and technical aspects of the on-going Corridors Zoning Update (covering College Avenue, north Shattuck and Solano).  The Steering Committee believes it is an important time to provide the Planning Department, the Planning Commission and the City Council with our perspective. Pursuant to the By-Laws, we will consider this position in the last 15 minutes of the April 8 meeting.  75% of the members must agree to consider the position; adoption requires a 60% supermajority to pass.

Location: AIA East Bay Conference Room, Brower Center, 2150 Allston Way #310, Berkeley, CA 94709.

Many thanks to AIA East Bay for hosting this event!
