Our Fall meetings will be held on Sept 9, Oct 7, and Nov 4. All meetings will be held in person, from 12-1pm, at the AIA East Office in the David Brower Center in Downtown Berkeley. Join us!
Please join us in person for a member-led workshop to discuss how Berkeley public sidewalks and streetscapes relate to new denser and pedestrian oriented buildings.
The workshop will begin with a short slideshow on design standards (generic and Berkeley’s), best practices elsewhere, and built design in Berkeley. The goal is to combine our previous discussions on downtown development, new development on College, north Shattuck and Solano Avenues, and the campus expansion and fusing into the urban fabric, with thoughts and perspectives on “sweating the small stuff” – sidewalk widths, bike lanes, street furniture, wayfinding and all the other items that create a comfortable and welcoming environment that supports commerce and social interaction.

Please join us in person for a BDA twofer: A discussion of the Berkeley waterfront, marina status, the proposed ferry terminal at the old pier and the new opportunity to turn the racetrack into an extension of the current waterfront park. Scott Ferris will make this presentation at 12:30pm and take questions afterwards.
Preceding this discussion, starting at 12:00pm, BDA officers will introduce the new Steering Committee and initiate a member discussion for about 25 minutes on members’ thoughts on direction, organization priorities and any other member considerations. Please join us in person for a robust presentation and discussion of the projects redefining the campus/city edge. BDA member Mark Rhoades, FAICP will provide context and support.
We will include the very significant work happening within the campus along the Bancroft and Hearst edges, as well. The city council members whose districts include these areas will also be invited.
Several exciting new investment and developments are underway right now that is redefining our campus/city edges. Hearst Avenue, Bancroft Way, and especially Oxford Way are being reshaped as you read this after decades of very little change. The boundaries are more blurred as the edges intensify and new urban environments are being created. The primary thrust of the changes are new student-oriented residential projects. But the campus has large projects underway both within the campus perimeter, and outside of it.
